Welcome to the April edition of Rail Express, which promises to be another packed issue for the modern rail enthusiast.
This month we have been to Strawberry Hill to meet the Southern Electric Traction Group (SETG) to see the restoration work on 4-VEP No. 423417 Gordon Pettitt. Although the slam-door electric multiple unit recently visited London Waterloo there is still much more to do before it can be used regularly on the main line, and the dedicated and highly professional group of volunteers tell Rail Express their plans.
Meanwhile, March 26 marks the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Class 50s by British Rail, however they were actually removed from regular traffic some two years prior to that. David Russell presents a detailed look at the rundown of this popular class.
The Stadler Class 777s are entering traffic on Merseyside and they are the subject of John Heaton’s 0 to 60 article, which provides some truly remarkable performance from the new four-car EMUs.
It’s been a bumper month for news too, and we have it covered. A Class 50 is joining the Locomotive Service Group fleet, while Great Western Railway battery unit No. 230001 has begun testing. The government has laid out its views on new trains while the Class 50 Alliance collected the Rail Express Modern Traction award at the recent Heritage Railway Association dinner.
Our unrivalled Traction and Rolling Stock news includes the latest retro livery for a GB Railfreight Class 69, more High Speed Train power cars to Great Yarmouth, Class 18s start work, Class 777s are stored at Long Marston, the ‘Shenfield Shark’ is scrapped, a second Midland Pullman HST is being created and a new charter operator plans to serve London Waterloo with heritage traction.
Rail Express Modeller is also packed with news and reviews including Bachmann’s revelation of Class 30 and ‘31s’ in ‘OO’ gauge, Revolution’s plans for Class 320 and ‘321’ EMUs in ‘OO’ gauge, a review of the Cavalex Class 56 and Accurascale Mk.2bs while D&E Files looks at 4-VEPs and 4-CIGs and, in modelling, the N Gauge Society’s Scottish Malt Distillers JIA wagon kit is finished.
I hope you agree that there is something for everyone and, most importantly, I hope you enjoy the magazine.
Best wishes
Richard Clinnick, Rail Express Editor
