Pete Kelly spends an absorbing weekend putting together a well-detailed Metcalfe building kit from a series of buildings based around the legendary Settle & Carlisle line that are also available in the even more richly detailed OO scale.
Just like model trains, card kit buildings are becoming more sophisticated by the day – and one needs look no further than Metcalfe’s new range of lineside buildings based on the Settle & Carlisle line in both OO and N scales, to find such an example.
Eight engaging hours were spent over the weekend of December 8-9 putting together the N-scale Settle & Carlisle Railway Goods Shed (PN 936) which includes intricate laser-cut items and comes with a fully-informative 12-page instruction booklet which, if followed carefully, will result in an attractive and highly-detailed model that will enhance any layout.
In the booklet, Nick Metcalfe underlines the importance of colour matching all those exposed white edges, recommending well-diluted watercolours for the job because of their versatility and forgiving nature.
Before beginning any kit build, make sure you have a good supply of scalpel blades, which need to be neither too sharp nor too blunt to avoid mistakes while cutting out the many components along their score lines.
The gable ends and side walls of the goods shed are made up of several layers of card – some plain, some printed – and because the inside of the building is just as detailed as the outside, all inner faces are printed too.
The golden rule is never to be too hasty with the glue, especially if it’s something as quick-setting as Roket, because what’s been done can never be undone without making a complete mess of it all.
