Stephenson Steam Railway announces new diesel driving experience

Visitors to Stephenson Steam Railway will be given then opportunity to take control of a classic British Rail Class 03 diesel locomotive as part of an exciting new driving experience.

The North Tyneside attraction is giving visitors the chance to learn how to operate a historic engine with a hands-on driving experience.

Under the guidance of qualified instructors, participants will learn how to prepare, start up, and manoeuvre the locomotive before collecting wagons and hauling a freight train along the line.

The experience will run on select Saturdays throughout the year, with the first available date in early April.

Priced at £200 per person, guests will also receive a completion certificate and complimentary North Tyneside Steam Railway Association mug. 

In addition to the driving experience, participants can also enjoy a guided tour of the railway’s workshop, where they can gain insight into the restoration and maintenance of historic locomotives. The experience also includes free time to explore the on-site museum.

Session times: 

  • Morning session: 9am – 12pm 
  • Afternoon session: 1 – 4pm 
    (Limited to two participants per session) 

Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended.
