60103 Flying Scotsman was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and was built in 1923. This was the first Steam Locomotive in the UK to reach 100mph. In 2023 Flying Scotsman is celebrating its centenary. Photo taken at the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex in August 2023.

Locomotion will host a spectacular six-week summer festival that includes a four-week visit from iconic locomotive Flying Scotsman.

Summer at Locomotion will take place from July 20 to September 1, with Flying Scotsman in residence from July 20 to August 18.  Flying Scotsman steam rides are now available to book, including an exclusive cab ride experience, the chance to ride in a brake van hauled by the world-famous locomotive, and behind-the-scenes tours of the support coach. Steam rides with a replica of the seminal Stephenson’s Rocket or the dependable 08 Diesel Shunter will also run, as well as an opportunity to view Flying Scotsman on static display and climb aboard the cab.

Special curator-led evening tours of Flying Scotsman are also on offer, while photographers can beat the crowds with exclusive early access to the museum’s incredible collection of vehicles and objects.

A ‘Shildon-by-the-Sea’ pop-up beach, street food stalls and a host of make-and-do activities will also be on offer. Lead sponsor Hornby will display a special model railway layout at the museum during the festival, running the steam Flying Scotsman model locomotive. CrossCountry has also sponsored the event.

The availability of experiences varies; free general admission booking is essential to guarantee entry. Full dates, details and booking information are available now at www.locomotion.org.uk

Early-morning sessions for visitors with sensory needs who wish to explore the museum in a quieter environment are also available. Locomotion has recently been fitted with an accessible ‘changing places’ facility for visitors with additional access needs.
