Welcome to the July edition of Rail Express.

This has been an important month for the railways, with the introduction of the full Elizabeth line timetable and the government taking control of TransPennine Express.

For our Elizabeth line coverage, I was able to speak to Elizabeth line director Howard Smith about the project’s journey to this point and what the future holds. Could there be new trains and what impact does the delay to HS2 reaching Euston have on the Elizabeth line?

MTR operates the new railway, and I was lucky enough to visit its training facility at Old Oak Common and sample both its simulator and innovative Virtual Reality training, which you can read about. And I was lucky enough to enjoy a cab ride from Stratford to Old Oak Common as part of that feature.

The Severn Valley Railway held a historic and highly successful Spring Diesel Festival on May 18-21, and we have a pictorial look at the event.

Our main feature is an interview with Cappagh Group director of rail David Fletcher looking at DC Rail and the role it is playing in building Britain’s mega projects. This exclusive feature details the company’s rise and its plans for continued growth.

Elsewhere there is a trip aboard a c2c Class 720/6 ahead of their launch this autumn, coverage of the ongoing saga of Great British Railways and the opening of the latest section of the Dawlish Sea Wall.

And there’s more! Direct Rail Services is selling locomotives, there has been trading between Harry Needle Railroad Company and Locomotive Services, Class 58s are being scrapped in France, there is a new passenger operator in the charter sector and our annual shunter survey has returned after a break.
