The colder weather is settling in fast, and although the kids are back at school, we’re know you’ll be looking for plenty to do at the weekends and during half-term. Don’t forget, steam and heritage railways are open all year round.
Here’s some upcoming heritage railway events across the UK…
1. Great Central Railway Autumn Steam Gala
Thursday, September 29 – Sunday, October 2
The Autumn Steam Gala will return from Thursday 29th September to Sunday 2nd October 2022. There’s also a Friday Night Fish & Chip Special, where you can travel into the evening with a portion of fish and chips delivered directly to your seat for just £9.50. More information can be found here.
2. Autumn Heritage Steam & Diesel Gala at GWSR
Saturday, October 29 – Sunday, October 30
GWSR’s autumn celebration of heritage steam and diesel trains will be held on Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 October 2022 featuring a magnificent ‘home fleet’ diesel and steam locomotives. Head to the Visit Cheltenham website for more information.
3. Autumn Classic Vehicle Rally & Steam Service at Foxfield Railway
Sunday, October 2
The ever popular Classic Vehicle Rally at Foxfield returns this October & the big trains will be on too! What could be more relaxing than a steam train ride through the Staffordshire countryside from the comfort of your own compartment?
4. Halloween Murder Mystery Night at Ribble Steam Railway
Sunday, October 30
One for those 16+, Ribble Steam Railway are to host a Halloween special – fancy dress is encouraged.
5. North Yorkshire Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala
Thursday, September 22 – Sunday, September 25.
Ride behind guest locomotives and home fleet engines across the four days with services calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (by request), Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby stations. LNER A4 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ No. 4498 (60007), BR Standard 5 No. 73156 and No. 85 Taff Vale Railway Class 02 will be joining for this hugely popular event. More information can be found here.
6. Steam Open Day at the Waterworks Museum, Hereford
Sunday, September 25.
The Waterworks Museum is one of Herefordshire’s leading visitor attractions, with something for all ages. At this event, free for those under 16, you can see amazing steam engines in action!
7. National Grandparents Day Family Fish & Chip Train at Nene Valley
Sunday, October 2.
Enjoy a family trip on board a heritage train whilst you all tuck into a freshly cooked chippy tea from Fryz of Bretton Chip Shop.

8. Back in Steam: The Sir Nigel Gresley Special Service
Monday, October 10 – Wednesday, October 12.
The iconic London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) steam locomotive No. 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley is returning to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. In celebration of this much loved locomotive’s return after having undergone a major overhaul, you’ll be able to enjoy a pre-booked return journey behind the only currently operational LNER Class A4, No. 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley.
9. The Ghost Train Through the Countryside at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway
Thursday, October 27 – Saturday, October 29.

10. Midland Railway Butterley Fireworks Night
Saturday, November 5.
Catch a train from Butterley to Swanwick Junction, to enjoy a spectacular fireworks display with music, take a trip on the Narrow Gauge Train through the Spooky Park if you dare and indulge in seasonal food and warming hot drinks. The attractions continue after the fireworks display so there is no need to rush home; trains will run until 9.30pm. There’s lots more to do at the event, find out here.
