Suffolk’s only standard gauge preserved railway and winners of 2021 Heritage Railway Association’s Restoration Award, the ‘Middy’ will operate steam trains on summer Sundays and Bank Holidays until 4th September.
Visitors can enjoy a ride on a section of the original trackbed from Brockford station to Dovebrook in genuine Victorian Great Eastern Railway 4-wheel coaches – an experience for any passengers, especially younger ones, to understand what rail travel was like over 100 years ago.
We have a full programme of events for the 2022 season starting with Middy in the 1940s, 28th and 29th May, featuring re-enactors, displays and music of the time. Then we are open Sundays and Bank Holidays from 5th June to 4th September from 10.30a.m. to 4.30p.m. Most Sundays there will also be added attractions with visits from car and motor-cycle clubs, railway modellers, even a Steam Punk Day.
Open Days will often feature more than one loco in operation and will feature our guest locomotive Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T ‘Wissington’, the 1906 Cockerill Tram 0-4-0WT and ‘Shreddie’ the HRA Restoration Award Winning Fowler diesel.
Visitors can ride the trains as many times as they like and all the railway and museum facilities will be open when trains are running – the railway museum, shop, café, Restoration Shed visits and real ale bar.
At Brockford there is a collection of locomotives and rolling stock, the museum, home to a collection of artefacts, documents and models telling the story of the building, operation and decline of the Middy.
The MSLR has a well-founded reputation for carriage and wagon restoration and there are two major projects in hand, returning our own steam locomotive Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T no. 1604 to traffic and our ambitious plan to extend the line to more than double the current length and provide a destination station, Aspall Halt.
