As the Spa Valley Railway’s 2022 operating season gets underway, Caledonian Railway 0-6-0 No. 828 has arrived this morning at Tunbridge Wells – its furthest southern holiday since being built.
Captured on camera by Heritage Railway’s Owen Hayward, the 1899-built locomotive has moved from its Strathspey Railway home. It is staying in Tunbridge Wells until October. The Spa Valley Railway first started discussing the prospect of 828 visiting back in 2019.
It is due to appear at the line’s Scottish Steam Up on April 2/3 alongside Caledonian Railway No. 419 – possibly the first time both 828 and 419 have met outside Scotland in preservation?
Owned by the CR828 Trust, No. 828 was built by the Caledonian Railway at in 1899. The locomotive was designed by J. F. Mcintosh to handle a variety of stopping passenger and express goods workings and is now the flagship of the Strathspey Railway, Aviemore.
Based at the Bo’ness & Kinnell Railway, No. 419 was built by the Caledonian Railway at St Rollox Works, Glasgow, in 1907. The locomotive was designed by J. F. Mcintosh for branch line work, fast suburban and banking duties and is now the flagship of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society.
