The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates trains over 18 miles of its own line and an additional 6 miles on the mainline to the seaside town of Whitby.
It is a charity and its purpose is to educate the public about the history of the line and to manage, maintain and develop its historic objects (such as heritage locomotives, carriages, archives).
Over 1000 volunteers support the continued delivery of the aims and objectives of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust working with a core paid staff of over 100.
Join our team where you will be overhauling and maintaining our fleet of heritage railway coaches and wagons to meet the demands of our busy passenger services.
Carriage Fitter
Reporting to the Carriage & Wagon Manager, this is a permanent position based mainly at our Carriage & Wagon works at Pickering and Engineering facility at Kirby Misperton.
A wide range of tasks are required including the following:
- Routine Fitness to Run examinations on service vehicles.
- Preventative maintenance and annual examinations on service vehicles.
- Component replacement, repairs & overhauls on running gear, steam heating, vacuum brake and 24 volt electrics on rolling stock belonging to NYMR and private owners.
- Restoration of Historic Vehicles.
You will be a time served Level 2 or above in engineering with particular knowledge of Steam and Vacuum systems as well as Bogies. Previous experience of working in the heritage sector, having worked on MK1 coaches is essential. You will also be enthusiastic and a team player.
The position is full time based on 36.5 hours per week. A flexible approach to working hours is required as some weekend work will be necessary.
You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Pickering you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.

Mechanical Foreman
Reporting to the Motive Power Department Manager, this is a permanent position based mainly at our Motive Power works at Grosmont.
A wide range of tasks are required including the following:
- To lead a team maintaining a running fleet of Steam Locomotives capable of meeting the needs of the operating department.
- In consultation with the Motive Power Manager, identify daily, weekly and long-term priorities and plan work accordingly.
- Prepare in consultation with Motive Power Manager, examination and maintenance schedules and ensure that these are carried out and that records are properly kept up to date.
- To carry out heavy overhauls on Steam Locomotives that are out of traffic to return them to operational condition.
You will be a time served Level 2 or above in engineering with particular knowledge of steam locomotive operation and restoration. Previous experience of working on steam locomotives is essential. You will also be enthusiastic and a team player.
The position is full time based on 36.5 hours per week. A flexible approach to working hours is required as some weekend work will be necessary.
You will also need a full driving licence as although based in Grosmont you may also be required to work at other locations on our railway.
