THE Talyllyn Railway (TR) has bought two cottages in Frankwell Street, Tywyn.
The £240,000 purchase includes land known as the ‘Orchard’, next to the railway’s Tywyn Pendre works site. The ‘Orchard’ site can be accessed by a narrow drive not part of the sale, and is bounded by houses and the railway.
Placing the ‘Orchard’ site (bought by the Talyllyn Railway) in context, this view in the opposite direction from the picture )left) shows the eastern end of the West carriage shed (bottom centre) and the constrained location of Pendre yard. Centre left of the tracks is the North carriage shed, while to the right of the main line is the South shed, loco shed and engineering workshop. Beyond the level crossing (on the left) is Pendre Enterprise Park, the location for a projected new engineering facility, out of frame at the top of the image. The main line continues up the valley to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. TALYLLYN RAILWAY
The land is subject to planning restrictions, but its acquisition potentially opens opportunities related to the railway’s proposals to redevelop its engineering facilities at Pendre, and studies into constructing a new TR engineering project in Pendre Enterprise Park
